AFC East: Secondary

Now to the part of the team which has the largest number of divas per square mile; the secondary!

4) New York Jets

The Jets had a huge need at cornerback and had lots and lots of cap room to address it. With the likes of Aqib Talib, Alterraun Verner, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Darrelle Revis available, it was the perfect time for the Jets to get that stud #1 CB. Instead, the Jets sat idly by as teams like the Broncos, Patriots and even Giants snatched up the good corners, leaving Rex Ryan a sad guy. This means that Dee Millner is their #1 CB, which is not a great situation to have, especially with the struggles he had his rookie year. At the #2 CB spot is rookie Dexter McDoogle, whose name means he will be the next Primetime. At the safety position, the Jets used their first round pick on Calvin Pryor, who is a stud strong safety. Pryor is a tough physical safety who will be a stud against the run and play some man coverage. However, the Jets still have a gaping hole at free safety which they did not address at all. Without that center fielder, this will happen a lot and that secondary will look awful again.

2) Buffalo Bills

Instead of franchise-tagging Andy Levitre, who would have helped with a young offense and ensured their 1st round QB didn’t have to run for his life on every play, the Bills gave Jairus Byrd the tag and he proceeded to hold out and miss the beginning of the season, and when he returned, was “meh” until the Bills were already out of it. After that, Byrd flew down south to the Saints, leaving the Bills with a gaping hole at safety. The good news is that Aaron Williams looks to be a good safety and is better than Byrd. The other safety position, however, looks to be a big question mark, as Duke Williams and Da’Norris Searcy fight it out, neither of which is that great. At the cornerback position, they got Stephon Gilmore, who, once he recovered from an early wrist injury and not having that club (cast), looked to be a solid #1, and the hope is that this year he takes the leap. The #2 position, however, is not as promising. Leodis McKelvin is the starter, but he hasn’t been that good minus last year. The good news is that they have two good nickel corners in Corey Graham and Nickell Robey, which means no Justin Rogers (who Geno Smith owes a dinner). Overall, the Bills have half of a good secondary; the other half, however, is up in the air.

2) Miami Dolphins

The big man for the Dolphins is Brent Grimes, who had a big year last year, and with his extension gives the Dolphins one of the better corners in the game. On the opposite side of him will be a mixture of Cortland Finnegan (when he isn’t getting into fights) and Jamar Taylor. Finnegan can still play corner pretty well, when he isn’t getting personal fouls. Taylor was a rookie last year and looks to be a guy who has some promise. The guy who I think will make a big impact is Walt Aikens, their 4th round draft pick. He is a small school guy but he flat-out dominated his competition while at Liberty, and he is going to push Taylor and Finnegan for the starting corner position opposite Grimes. At the safety position, there is free agent Louis Delmas, who was a decent player when healthy for the Lions. At the other safety position is Reshad Jones, who just before last year got a four-year extension and he is a guy who, when he is on, is pretty good. The Dolphins have a lot of pieces of a good secondary; they just need it to mix together.

1) New England Patriots

The Patriots made a big splash when they lured Darrelle Revis to New England. Revis is the second-best corner in the game (behind only Greg Reid) and he alone gives the Pats a pretty good secondary. Helping him out is Brandon Browner, who after his suspension will give them another big press corner. Alfonzo Dennard is now the third corner, which speaks to the talent they have. At the safety position, they have some guy and Devin McCourty, who is a top 10 safety already. The Pats have one of the better secondaries in the NFL and will help make up for their pathetic front four and thin linebacker corp. The only flaw is the strong safety position where that guy is Manning, but Revis and McCourty make up for that.
