Welcome to the first day of fall.
Fall is good. It’s a time for renewal, of shedding old things, of packing in supplies to last through the long, harsh…
Football season.
Since summer offered us some very unique features pertaining to the NFL (Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, throngs of fan-driven determinations, Roger Goodell’s repeated failures), I can only imagine what will transpire off the field. Personally, I’m more than happy to just embrace the drama on it.
Enjoy today’s AFC North links.
Baltimore Ravens
Will (Ravens owner) Steve Bisciotti be forced to sell the team?
My Take: Doubtful. Stranger things have occurred, and in this lynch-mob, string-’em-up, socially-connected world, anything is possible. But the Donald Sterling matter and this have little similarity, as Sterling had numerous documented infractions of the NBA’s behavioral codes, and this is the first time Bisciotti has come under scrutiny. The punishment wouldn’t fit the crime, disreputable as it might be. I can see the Ravens losing draft picks or other limiting sanctions, such as a team-reduced salary cap.
Cleveland Browns
The Browns are exceeding expectations on offense.
My Take: There’s no question they’ve improved considerably. The offensive line is in midseason form, and the opportunistic running game has never looked better. Most importantly, the Browns haven’t had quarterback play like this in some time.
Cincinnati Bengals
Are the Bengals the best team in the NFL?
My Take: According to this article, they are, and they appear to be backing it up on the field. But as most fans and non-fans will tell you, it means little at this point. The regular season is clearly important for seedings and matchups, but this Bengals team won’t be considered the best unless they produce a deep playoff run at minimum.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers have a number of scenarios in play as they attempt to address their injuries.
My Take: The loss of (cornerback Ike) Taylor is more significant than the others, as the Steelers haven’t sported much depth in the secondary for a couple of years. Incumbent Cortez Allen can expect to see many more passes directed his way during Taylor’s absence.
