Lets get down to business:
The Bills struggled to stop a bunch of mediocre RBs this week, after watching the Jets run
offense shred the Patriots, how do the Bills stop this Jets running attack?
The Bills struggled against a quick, elusive RB in McKinnon. Chris Ivory isn’t elusive so much as
he is a battering ram who sheds would be tacklers. I’m not concerned about the run defense
because, unlike the Patriots, the Bills have a studly defensive line with a couple of good run
stuffing LB’s behind them. I’m more concerned about Geno taking off than I am about Ivory
running amok.
Speaking of Geno, how well do you think he’ll react to the Bills front four pressuring him all
game?
The Bills front four are as good as it gets, and Geno will have to be very aware of them for 60 minutes. I look at the Patriots game, and what I noticed was a change in Smith’s game. He was clearly told to get rid of the ball quickly and throw it away if the pass or run is not there. I see that as part of the game plan this week, especially because of the league leading sacks team. I also think you will see numerous quick slants and screens to keep Geno upright; another reason why Percy Harvin was acquired.
The loss of both CJ Spiller and workhorse Fred Jackson, coupled with a shaky passing situation, what will the offense look like?
I guess we’ll see if Bryce Brown is worth what we paid for him. There’s a comparison that can be made between he and CJ, as well as between Dixon and FredEx, and I think that they can step up and fill their shoes adequately. The larger problem remains the offensive line, the root cause of our offensive struggles both in the air and on the ground. I expect the Bills will come out firing, trying to hit quick, deep shots to the WRs and take advantage of a shaky Jets secondary without allowing their front line time to get to Orton. But we sure as hell will be missing Fred Jackson’s leadership and clutch play when the game is on the line.
The Jets offense has been pretty pathetic this year, but last year in New Jersey Geno Smith had one of the best games of his career. How well do you think he’ll perform this coming Sunday, especially now that he doesn’t have Justin Rogers to pick on?
Last year the Jets did something in that game they never did again all season, they basically ran a two minute offense all game long. That was clearly designed to keep “Blitz-happy” Pettine off balance. I do not see that this year, and I do not see Geno throwing more than 25-30 times. The Jets have a solid running game, and they will attack the Bills with it all day. Harvin’s presence will make the Bills think twice about jamming the box. To answer your question, Geno will not need to be the hero in this game, at least not with his arm. Decker may finally be healthy, look for a big game from him.
The Bills we all saw weeks 1 and 2 are not these Bills, suddenly they are not clicking .what gives? The Vikings started a young kid at QB!
I honestly think the Bills were looking ahead to the Jets instead of focusing on Minnesota. They should have dominated a poor team in Buffalo instead of fighting for their lives until the last second. But it was still a win and they showed some resilience on defense by not giving up points off of the offense’s four turnovers.
How much does the Bills defense worry you? The sacks, the QB pressure, the suddenly, surprisingly stout run defense, all of it adds up to a potential nightmare for the Jets offense.
The Bills Defense is really good, and God knows how much better they would be if Kiko was not injured and they found it in their hearts to pay Jarius Byrd. It is now very clear that Pettine sacrificed the ability top stop the run at the sake of getting a sacks record, thus making himself a name to bolt for a HC job. The Bills Defense does worry me, and if Geno doesn’t play fast and make quick decisions, he will get buried. I think Geno needs to use his legs, because when the Bills over pursuit into the backfield, and LBs are too busy wondering where Amaro, Kerley and Cumberland are, Geno will have a lot of room to run.
Suddenly the Bills have become the Jets in the “gift that keeps on giving”, Bills appear sloppy and undisciplined offensively, what has happened?
Lord knows. Receivers can’t hold on to the ball, Orton has made some questionable decisions as well, and penalties continue to be an issue. I think that Marrone and Co will be putting a lot of emphasis on that this week, because we all know the Jets are not as horrible as their record implies and we can’t get away with turning it over four times on the road against a division opponent.
Sammy Watkins has proven that he has legitimate top five draft pick talent in the NFL. What hope does someone like Dee Milliner have against that? Can anyone in the Jets cover him one on one?
I loved Watkins coming out, and obviously the Bills did too. He will become a stud WR in this league for years to come, even if he was paid a steep price. Dee is not a factor and the Jets have moved on for the rest of this half of the season. Walls, Allen, and the rest of the group that makes up the “patched-up” CB situation has actually done better than people think. To say the Jets are 1-6 because of their CB mess is not a fair statement at all. I think Watkins will get his chances to put up numbers but I don’t think he will be the factor in the outcome of this game.
One last question that has to be asked: Does it still make sense to keep a first round pick on the bench in favor of an old recycled dude that was unemployed a week before the season?
Short term, yes. I was against starting Orton more than almost anyone, but he’s playing really well, better than he ever has really. As long as he keeps that up, keep him in the game. It’s tough to remember how even five years ago, a quarterback like EJ Manuel would never have seen the field in his first year. I think he’s got the skills to be a good QB in the NFL, but he was raw coming out of college and he’s raw in his second year because he’s never had the chance to really sit down and learn the game from behind a seasoned pro.
Final Question to both: Who wins one of the oldest divisional contest?
When I looked at the schedule there were two games I felt the Jets would win in their first 8, week one and week 8. I was hoping they would sneak one or more in between, that didn’t happen. I also underestimated the Buffalo Bills, they are much better than anticipated. However, I think the Bills are what the Jets needed this week; without the tandem RBs the Bills become very one dimensional, and I do not believe in Orton, Jets will win as the Bills make a late comeback …CJ let me be the first to show you your new name “CJ i 1and2inthePegulaEra”….Jets 24-20
