With the regular season finally over, it is officially the offseason for the New York Jets and they prepare their draft boards and start scouting players beginning with the bowl games. Here is a very early mock draft for the Jets.
1st) Kevin White WR from West Virginia
It is a toss up between White and DeVante Parker and overall I decide on White due to less health concerns. The Jets desperately need offense and they unfortunately miss out on Amari Cooper. White had a breakout year at West Virginia as he had 9 100+ yard games receiving and put him in the conversation as one of the top WRs in this class. He is the right size at 6’3 210 and has a good balance of size and speed and is able to make those contested catches and 50/50 balls. The Jets need a true #1 WR as Decker is better suited as a real good #2 and White would give them that true #1 WR who can go get it and give the Jets a 1-2 punch at WR.
2nd) Mario Edwards JR, DE from Florida State
The Jets don’t really “need” a DL as they have two pretty good ones in Sheldon and Wilkerson but with the new HC and the potentially new defensive scheme could mean they need another lineman up front. Mario is 6’3 294 and has played DE, or DT depending on the scheme and has shown ability to rush the passer or take in blocks to open up other players. He didn’t have the amazing numbers in college which is why he will drop into the 2nd round in the draft but a trio of Sheldon-Wilk-Mario will give the Jets a pretty solid DL to build the defense off of.
3rd) Garrett Grayson QB from Colorado State
With a new HC and new GM, more than likely they will want a new QB to be their own guy. Grayson is the top senior QB in this class and has good enough arm strength, accuracy and mobility to play in the NFL. He has a fairly productive year in 2014 with a 32-7 TD:INT ratio. He ran a pro offense in college which means unlike the majority of the QBs the Jets can draft, he wouldn’t require a redshirt year to develop. At the very least he can start from day one and compete with Geno Smith for the starting QB job.
4th) Josh Shaw CB from USC
The Jets secondary is pretty bad and while injuries played a big role, another reason was lack of talent. Jets invest another player into that secondary with Josh Shaw who was a highly touted prospect heading into the 2014 season but has took a hit due to injury and off the field issues regarding him lying about his injury. He has the size you want at CB at 6’1 200 and has shown the ability to shut down WRs. If his off the field issues check out, he would give the Jets another young CB to go with Millner.
5th) Austin Shepherd OL from Rawl Tyde
OL is a position that should be drafted every year and the Jets take a flier on Shepherd who has good size at 6’5 315. He has been moved around the line at Bama and he can more than likely slide in to guard when need be. With the Jets having some aging players on the line, they could use some more young talent as backups and long-term prospects.
7th) Kasen Williams WR from Washington
Kasen going into his senior year was expected to make a run for one of the top WRs in the class but this year he as declined heavily coming back from injury and not even being a big part of the offense as he only has 15 catches all year. For some reason the new coaching staff does not like him which has made him plummet in the draft boards. He has good size at 6’2 and if the off the field stuff checks out, could become a steal in the draft for the Jets who need offense.
