We find historic data supports Geno Smith playing in the 2013 Conference Championship.
This week Geno Smith travels to M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore to face Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens. The opportunity of being on the same field as Joe Flacco as a rookie makes this a significant game in Geno’s career and a reminder of what’s expected of him.
In 2008 Joe Flacco took the Ravens to the AFC Championship Game and the next year Mark Sanchez led the New York Jets to the 2009 AFC Championship Game. Joe Flacco and Mark Sanchez both had the support of a Rex Ryan defense behind them as does Geno Smith and anything less than an appearance in the 2013 AFC Championship Game will fail to meet expectations.
We asked our department of selective statistics for a quick review of Joe Flacco’s 2008 season, Mark Sanchez’s 2009 season, with a comparison of the numbers after 10 games. It was a pleasant surprise to find Geno Smith more or less on track to match their results. There is a little give and take in the statistical categories with Geno Smith having a lower completion rate but higher total yards for example. On final analysis we find the numbers close enough to conclude seeing Geno Smith and the New York Jets to be playing in the AFC Championship Game on January 19th, 2014 a real possibility.
Team& Individual Records after 10 games.

4-6 — Mark Sanchez and the 2009 Jets
5-5 — Geno Smith and the 2013 Jets

In fairness to our department of selective statistics they did pass along some gibberish about the relative strengths of the defenses for the years in question without being asked. This data was deemed meaningless. Rex Ryan defense takes his 3rd rookie QB to the Conference Championship.
