“Yeah, yeah, I know: We can’t comfortably project a heavy workload for McCaffrey this week. But I’m totally sold on his talent. The kid moves like mercury — either the chemical element or the Roman god, take your pick. And it seems reasonable to assume that McCaffrey will get a minimum of 14-15 touches with the Panthers a 7-point home favorite against the Bills.”

Buffalo Bills
The Bills have just one player (DL Jerel Worthy) not practicing this week and only two players on injured reserve. Their health is why they will keep the game closer than the 7.5-point advantage most sportsbooks are giving Carolina. However, I am not convinced that Tyrod Taylor will be able to keep pace with Cam Newton if the Bills fall behind and cannot rely on their running game. When the Bills were trailing in road games last season, Taylor’s passer rating was 67.2, or 30th among qualifying NFL quarterbacks, and he threw only one touchdown. Panthers 21, Bills 17 — Mike Rodak
Carolina Panthers
How Bills coach Sean McDermott handles Panthers rookie running back Christian McCaffrey will be key in this one. McCaffrey is a major piece of the puzzle that wasn’t at Carolina when McDermott was the defensive coordinator last season. So as well as McDermott knows Newton in this chess match, he can’t predict how Newton and offensive coordinator Mike Shula will use McCaffrey, who was targeted seven times in the passing game in the opener at San Francisco. The more Newton got comfortable with McCaffrey, the better Newton got in the opener, completing his final nine passes. Bottom line: The Panthers have too much talent to make this homecoming an upset. New York Jets
This is a bad matchup for the Jets, who allowed eight plays of 20-plus yards in the opener — and that was against the Bills. Imagine what Derek Carr & Co. will do to them. The Jets don’t have enough offense to exploit the Raiders’ deficiencies, which will make for a long day. They will be 0-2 for the first time since 2007. Raiders 31, Jets 13 — Rich Cimini
Oakland Raiders
In the Raiders’ recent past, this would have had “trap game” written all over it, with Oakland having looked good in a season-opening win at Tennessee and the Jets a fashionable pick to go 0-16. But this is a different Raiders team, one that respects all but fears none, as Oakland coach Jack Del Rio said. “Their defensive front is as talented as any that we’ll face,” Del Rio said of the Jets. “They’re very aggressive in their scheme. The two safeties they drafted, we think, are really good football players.” Thing is, the Raiders are loaded on offense, and after what Carr said was an unsatisfactory performance against the Titans, expect a sustained effort after a quick start this time around, with RB Marshawn Lynch running wild in his home regular-season debut. “He scored three touchdowns in Week 1 on a team that clearly helped the pedestrian LeGarrette Blount lead the league with 18 last year. This game has the highest projected total of the week at 56 points, and it wouldn’t surprise if that goes down as the highest over/under of the year. The Saints allowed the third-most fantasy points to running backs last year, so I’m not sure why projecting Gillislee as a top-12 fantasy back in Week 2 seems high. If anything it’s low.”

“I’ve been friends with 4for4’s John Paulsen for several years now, and clearly John’s boundless enthusiasm for Ginn has rubbed off on me. As I wrote in my Saints team preview this summer, Ginn’s hands rank just below topaz on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, but it doesn’t really matter. He’s a starting receiver playing with one of the top QBs in the league, he’ll be playing in a game with a Vegas total of around 55.5 points, and he has lethal speed. Ginn has a decent chance of rolling Yahtzee this weekend.”

New England Patriots
Since the beginning of 2003, the Patriots are 42-6 in regular-season games following a loss. As a starter in his career, Tom Brady is 42-10 in games following a loss. This game is about heart for the Patriots after they were outscored 21-0 in the fourth quarter of the season-opening loss to the Chiefs, and they’ll show that they have it. Patriots 34, Saints 27 — Mike Reiss
New Orleans Saints
Brady and Drew Brees should both be licking their chops in this one. The Patriots’ defense allowed 537 yards in their Week 1 loss, while the Saints gave up 470 yards, the two worst statistical performances in the NFL. New England’s defense will be hurting if linebacker Dont’a Hightower can’t play, but the Saints’ offense also will be undermanned without injured right tackle Zach Strief. So I’ll stick with the more proven team in this one. The Patriots haven’t been two games under .500 since Brady first took over in 2001. Patriots 31, Saints 26 — Mike Triplett
