The New York Jets will travel to face a desperate Atlanta Falcons team in an NFL Monday Night Football game in week five.
New York is 2-2 on the season following a bad 38-13 road defeat last week to the Tennessee Titans. The team put up 330 yards of offense with 91 running on 23 carries. Quarterback Geno Smith hit on 23 of 34 passes for 289 yards with a touchdown and two picks. The Jets gave away the game with a -4 turnover margin in their worst effort to date. On defense they stuffed the Titans run game to 78 yards on 31 carries but allowed 244 yards passing and four touchdowns throws by the Tennessee quarterbacks.
Now looking at the Patriot – Falcon match up last week there is some hope for a Jet victory. Atlanta still put up 457 yards on the Patriots defense with 58 running on 15 carries but the Jets defense is much more potent. Matt Ryan hit on 34 of 54 passes for 421 yard with two touchdowns and a pick. The Falcons go a miserable 1 of 6 inside the red zone and give up the football on downs deep in Patriots territory as they fail to tie the score in the closing seconds. On defense they gave up 448 yards to the Patriots including 316 passing yards and two touchdowns to Tom Brady.
What this means is that the Falcons are very weak in the secondary and Geno Smith has a chance to light it up provided the running game comes through. The only question mark will be if Julio Jones comes in a produces, if so then we might just have a shoot-put on out hands. The keys for Geno will be: NO TURN OVERS, protect the ball at all costs and he must use his legs to extend the plays. Use the running game and go back to the ground and pound Rex style of play, especially with the Falcons weak line that allowed over 100 yard rushing from the Patriots. rex Ryan will have to play a methodical coaching game because this game will go down to the wire and the time-outs will be crucial.
Prediction:
31 – 27 Jets
