Post-Season Recap: Bills

Post-Season Recap: Bills
class="post-date-wrap left relative post-date-mob">

Well, that fucking sucked.

By most accounts, the Bills did nothing but overachieve in 2024. They were projected to take a major step back after losing many key players, then trading away Stefon Diggs to the Texans and eating a massive dead cap hit. They were criticized for their lack of talent on offense and defense and many, even most, predicted the Bills would lose their division title streak to the Jets or even the Dolphins. Instead, they curb-stomped their way to a fifth straight title, had the best season of offensive output in team history (and second best in the league), cruised to yet another 13 win season, Josh Allen won MVP, and they only lost a division game because they wanted to. If not for an incredible streak of good luck and poor officiating in favor of the Chiefs, they would have been the 1-seed as well. Instead, they had to go to KC to end their season in the traditional Bills fashion, with futility. A combination of bad coaching, bad execution, bad injury luck, and bad officiating again caused the Bills to lose a close one in Arrowhead.

Now, it’s in no way surprising that the god-awful Bills defense gave up a season high in points scored to the Chiefs. Andy Reid vs. Sean McDermott is like putting Steven Hawking up against a 3 year old in a calculus competition. The only thing the Bills’ D was good at all year was catching gifts from the opposing offense (see: Ravens in the divisional round). The rest of the time, they were the worst defense I’ve seen them put on the field in the last 10 years. Which is saying a lot. The real surprise was that we lost with the ball in Josh Allen’s hands. I mean, technically, the defense could have stood up and gotten the ball back with like a minute left, but that had about as much of a chance of happening as I do of sprouting wings and flying. That drop by Kincaid on what should have been a season defining go-ahead drive perfectly encapsulated what it is to be a Bills fan, if I’m being honest. The offense shared in the failure this time around, although 29 points should have been enough against the Chiefs and the Anointed One’s shitty offense. Still, it was jarring to see them not get the job done on offense with multiple chances to put the game away.

Ah well, it’s only 5 months until the season starts again and McDermott leads us to another playoff loss. Can’t wait until January…
